MODEL ANSWER
Theoretical Orientation to Family/Couple Therapy
Introduction
Every individual has their way of thinking and reacts differently to the various kinds of therapy. As such, theoretical orientation is an essential aspect for both the client and the therapist. A therapist may be excellent in one type of therapy but lacking in another. Similarly, a client may not pay attention to one form of therapy but will conform to another form greatly. Therefore, theoretical orientation refers to a personalized method in which a therapist cares for their clients.

Each client has different needs and responds differently to treatments, and as such, theoretical orientation helps the therapist to find a better way of tackling their patient’s problems. Theoretical orientation usually involves knowing the patient and with the pass of time, the therapist applies some techniques to evaluate what works and what does not. This paper, therefore, examines the Family Systems Therapy (FST) as my theoretical orientation for dealing with couples and family.

View of the Basic Human Nature under FST
FST is based on a systems way of thinking, as it perceives the family as a single emotional component (Schwartz & Sweezy, 2019). The system’s way of thinking examines the different parts of the system and their connection to the whole. When applied to family therapy, systems thinking proposes that the functioning of a family often informs the behavior of an individual and that, they are inseparable. The Family Systems Approach relies on the family systems theory by Murray Bowen (Schwartz & Sweezy, 2019), which posits that an individual is inseparable from their relationship networks.
Bowen believed that human nature was inherently predisposed to the family of origin and that a therapist’s awareness of this experience could help in normalizing people’s behaviour in | PLACE YOUR ORDER NOW AT writtask.com | of individual therapy, the therapist addressed the person’s inner psyche to create a shift in their relationships and other life domains. In contrast, Bowen’s theory proposes the benefits of addressing the behavior and structure of the whole relationship system which contributes to the formulation of the basic human instinct and character. According to the theorist, a change in one component of the family system affects the way the entire system works overtime.
The Key Determinants for the Change in Behaviour

Such experiences may be psychological, personal, environmental, or | PLACE YOUR ORDER NOW AT writtask.com | that may influence a person’s behavior is attitude. Some situations in life such as the death of a loved one can cause severe psychological trauma if unchecked and may result in shifts in behavior. For instance, an individual may engage in self-destructive behaviors like drug abuse, as a coping mechanism due to the loss of a family member or loved one.
The environment in which a person grew up may also affect their | PLACE YOUR ORDER NOW AT writtask.com | follow their parents’ convictions whether they are good or bad, which in turn affects how they behave. The child learns to behave by observing the behavioral patterns of their immediate figures of attachment, which in turn molds their behavior through imitation. The personal determinants lie on the borderlines of personality and character traits (Ackerman, 2019).

These beliefs and cultures may shape an individual’s character and behavior. For instance, some cultures believe that women are not supposed to assert themselves but rather they ought to be submissive. Intervention strategies within the FST Theoretical Orientation
In FST, a therapist can apply exercise and techniques from cognitive therapy, interpersonal therapy, behavior therapy, or other forms of individual | PLACE YOUR ORDER NOW AT writtask.com | forms of treatment, the therapist uses techniques depending on the specific problem of the clients. In the family unit, emotional or behavioral problems in children exist, and the therapist will more likely address them, within the family’s context (Herkov, 2016).
In FST, the word family does not specifically imply blood relatives, but it refers to any person that has a long-ter | PLACE YOUR ORDER NOW AT writtask.com | home (Ackerman, 2019). A therapist may use various techniques to design their intervention methods such as psychoeducation depending on the client’s needs | PLACE YOUR ORDER NOW AT writtask.com | is the Bowenian method. The therapist can use this method when individuals do not want the involvement of other members of their family. It is based on two principles: differentiation and triangulation (Ackerman, 2019).
