The history and timelines of management theory indicate that early principles applied to management were born out of necessity. As a result, these practices were highly structured and followed certain rules, which when broken, it was thought, would lead to production crises. For instance, the scientific management principles that were first proposed by Winslow Taylor indicate that that productivity is increased through simplification of jobs, increased cooperation between the workers and the managers and the need to monitor performance. However, the philosophy espoused by Google contradicts this very foundation of how work should be managed and accomplished. The technology giant promotes a more leisez fair approach to management where the employees are encouraged to have fun while working, which includes deciding when and how to work. The organization provides the workers with different tools to have fun, including playing video games, napping pods, and other games.
