3. Introduction

  • Provide a brief background of why this concept is important

Prejudice, discrimination, and stereotyping are terms that are used interchangeably despite having different but close meanings. Prejudice is defined as having preconceived ideas or opinions which may not be based on reason or any experience. As an example, a person may opt not to like another person because of color which gives racial prejudice, the religion which gives religious prejudice. It is from these forms of prejudice that discrimination and stereotyping comes in. While discrimination is negative behavior towards another person based on any form of prejudice, a stereotype is an over-generalized belief about a given category of people. An example of a stereotype is Africans are bad in English. Cases of different forms of prejudice are common and the negative results are dire. For football lovers, clubs have been heavily fined after their fans engaged in racial slurs against players from opposing teams. In the US, cases of police shoot-outs targeted at black Americans have also been common making this area interesting for psychology research.

The Cognitive Component

Cognitive component is a type stereotype which dictates that prejudice is a form of cognitive processes where a person’s stereotypic information is in a person’s memory and can be easily ignite once the target group is in the vicinity.
