Summarize the Theories for Language Development: Behavioral Theory This theory posits that the environment influences language learning and that people’s behaviors are a reaction to external stimuli caused by operant conditioning. Operant conditioning is a process where the behaviors change with negative or positive reinforcement. Also, children learn language behaviors through imitation and support as well as copying adult behaviors.           Nativistic Theory: This theory argues that language is genetically transmitted, physiologically determined and innate. This statement means that children already have the genetic make-up of acquiring a language. Their behavior is activated when they are exposed to the language. The nativistic theory holds that children are born with the significant fundamentals of communication in their brains. Thus, they do not require any form of teaching. However, children are unable to use this capability in isolation fully. They must be in the presence of other humans. Social Interactionist Theory This theory focuses on the context and the environment through which a child learns a language. It stresses on the practicality of a language instead of the grammar, which in this case should come after. This theory holds that language is not inherent, but it progresses as the child negotiates with its environment. Thus, the context forms the basis for the vocabulary or background within which speaking is understandable and necessary.
