Identify a current change in an organization with which you are familiar. Alternatively, identify a current public issue about which “something must be done”. In relation to the change issue, think about what sense-making changes might need to be enacted and how you would go about this. Assess this in terms of the eight elements of the sense-making framework suggested by Helms Mills and as set out in Table 9.7 on page 303.

A current change in an organization that I’m familiar with is reversing roles for staff for closing shifts at the grocery store I work at. It seems randomly, our managers decided that closing roles were to be switched for the person closing the front desk and the person closing the front end. The person closing the front desk does floor care which involves scrubbing the floor with the scrub machine, then taking it apart and cleaning it. The front end closer cleans the entire front end including registers and making sure everything looks presentable. The problem the staff had with this is the front end closer starts cleaning the front end before the front desk person starts the floors. Therefore, if they switched roles, communication could get lost on what was already done by the front end closer and what wasn’t done yet for the front desk person. To the staff, the reversed roles just didn’t make sense.

One current public issue is lack of efficiency among organizations. This goes in hand with the change issue because our already efficient system was changed for no specific reason. One of the eight features of a sense-making framework that stood out with this issue the most was “Extracted Cues of Sense-Making” which states, “the need for managers of change to be aware of the way people draw on a variety of ‘cues’ or ideas and actions, perhaps taken from the external environment, to make sense of various decisions” (Palmer et al., 2022). Managers must be aware of the external environment to assess the efficiency of the change.
