In Chapter 3, the author wrote, “Another highly important cause for the neglect or even the denial of international education in the common school legacy came from the Americanization ideology and policy that public schools followed in the nineteenth and through much of the twentieth centuries. Americanization meant that the public schools should socialize non-English speaking peoples, especially immigrants, into American society through a deliberate program of imposing the dominant cultural group’s model, or definition, of what it meant to be an American….Americanization formed educational policies and practices that, in turn, shaped the schools’ formal curriculum and the educational milieu of the hidden curriculum.” (pp. 48-49)

This “hidden curriculum” had a lot of implications for “minority” groups in America – those who were not of the “majority” population – specifically, WASP (White, Anglo Saxon Protestant).

For this activity, you are going to explore some primary sources to research the experience of three groups of individuals in the United States: the Japanese-Americans, the Mexican-Americans, and the Arab-Americans.

Primary sources differ from secondary sources, because they provide a personalized account of an individual’s reality. There are several websites that capture primary sources. For example, you may have heard of World War II veterans’ and/or Holocaust survivors’ oral history projects.
