“I work for K-west Healthcare system in Baltimore, Md; and I have been an OBGYN nursing supervisor for over ten years. I’m very compassionate and many people can feel and sense this the moment I start to have a conversation with them. In my line of duty, I wear many hats but my focus is getting the job completed safely. There are times where I have to be more authoritative because being a supervisor can be very challenging especially since this pandemic. In reference to this pandemic I myself have gotten COVID 19 and I tell you I was at deaths door. I literally had to fight for every breath that I took through the illness. Why did you choose your specialty?
“I chose this field of work because I have a compassion for women and their female concerns. I have been an RN since 1997 and my specialties included Med-Surg rehab and Geriatric. I have floated a couple of times to the ICU and ER but, those were my younger years. I remember the moment I went to work in more of ambulatory care setting in a small family practice clinic. I would help with some of the female concerns and referrals along with the doctor. Amongst all of the medical concerns that would come across the board the women diagnoses and conditions piqued my interest the most. This is when I pursued working in more of an OBGYN care setting and landed a job providing care for women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.”

Where do you see yourself in five years?
“I would like become a director of nursing in a women’s health care facility.”

How would you handle a patient, who complains about everything?
“From this standpoint I would utilize my listening skills; so many patient’s say that someone did not hear their concern. Therefore, a patient who seems to complain about everything. What is the most difficult part of being a nurse?
“For me the difficult part of being a nurse is when someone has a terminal illness; having to look them in their eyes after they ask the fatal question “will I die”? Is very difficult and heart wrenching. However, I have been faced with this question several times in my career.”

“My biggest strength is advocating and communicating for indivduals not giving up. But my weakness is not knowing when to cut the limit off. Sometimes you have to know when enough is enough although striving for the best is good; but understanding the limitations throughout a plan can help with managing the project better.”

What measures have you taken to upgrade your knowledge?
“At this time, I’m taking nursing management classes; I’m working on my masters. Also, in order to upgrade my current knowledge about this pandemic I attend online nursing conferences, participate in infectious control training.”

“My former supervisor was very strict and authoritative in nature, I felt that communicating with her was very difficult. But everyone respected her commitment and hard work.”

What motivates you to work in the nursing field?
“Speaking and advocating for patient’s , I enjoy seeing life come into the world especially since this pandemic.”

What is your greatest failure?
“My greatest failure was not spending enough time with myself. When I had COVID 19 getting from moment to moment was the most horrendous challenge. Now when I come home from a day work, I take time to thank my Creator, I take time to reflect, and meditate and actually have a solidify that attitude of gratitude.”
