Answer

The human services values described in An Introduction to Human Services include a commitment to social justice, respect for diversity, service to underserved and marginalized populations, confidentiality and privacy, and self-determination. Of these values, the one that is most difficult for me to practice is probably confidentiality and privacy. This can be difficult because sometimes there is a tension between the desire to protect a client’s privacy and the need to share information in order to provide effective services or to protect the safety of the client or others.

For example, if a client confides in me about a situation that could potentially be harmful to them or to others (such as abuse, neglect, or self-harm), it might be difficult for me to uphold their right to privacy while also taking appropriate steps to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
