The human services values described in An Introduction to Human Services include a commitment to social justice, respect for diversity, service to underserved and marginalized populations, confidentiality and privacy, and self-determination. Of these values, the one that is most difficult for me to practice is probably confidentiality and privacy. This can be difficult because sometimes there is a tension between the desire to protect a client’s privacy and the need to share information in order to provide effective services or to protect the safety of the client or others.
