Introduction Prenatal exposure continues to be a problem within the United States. Studies “have found that infants born to mothers with opioid and polysubstance-abuse during pregnancy show lower cognitive performance and affect regulation than non-exposed infants (Nygaard p.330).” When a baby is born addicted to opioids, apparent symptoms are displayed; symptoms include “low birth weight, significant respiratory issues such as meconium aspiration and respiratory distress syndrome, feeding difficulty, sepsis, and seizures (Carter., 2019).” As a result of these symptoms, infants must stay in the hospital longer than infants born without (Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome). Prenatal drug use causes not only immediate complications but also long-term complications. “Children prenatally exposed to opioids and polysubstance are at increased risk for neuropsychological dysfunction (Nygaard p.330).” Nygaard and his colleagues found that infants exposed to opioids functioned less…
