Discussion: Progressive Relaxation
Progressive relaxation is a treatment technique for tension and anxiety. It is a technique whereby a patient systematically tenses and relaxes groups of muscle throughout the body while remaining attentive to the tension and relaxation-associated feelings that come about. The technique has been used in combination with standard treatments for relief of symptoms including digestive disturbances, headaches, high blood pressure, and cancer pain. Progressive relaxation techniques were first described by Edmund Jacobson in the 1930s for the treatment of tension and anxiety (Kim et al., 2016).
Several techniques may be used in progressive relaxation including progressive muscle relaxation, autogenic relaxation, and visualization. In autogenic relaxation, a person reduces stress and anxiety using their visual imagery and body awareness.
