Pediatric Assent Discussion

In Chapter 8 section \”Science and Technology Innovations and and Ethics Concerns,\” a discussion of the Tuskegee and Willowbrook medical research studies highlight the problematic issue of pediatric consent. As children under 18 are not legally allowed to give informed consent, a practice of \”assent\” is in place for pediatric medical situations.

1. Locate 1-2 academic articles that discuss pediatric assent in medical scenarios.
2. Form an opinion on whether pediatric assent, dissent, and/or informed consent should be best practice in the United States.
3. Create a post discussing your opinion, basing your view on academic articles or textbook information (make sure to use in text citations for all references). Include any personal stories from your own life or healthcare settings in which you have worked.

Pediatric assent, dissent, and consent are practices that are gaining prominence when it comes to giving treatments and involving children in the decision making process about their health care.  In my opinions getting to involve the child or adolescent in any treatment, processes make them more willing and optimistic that the treatment will work in their favor (Katz et al., 2016). This is important since a positive state of mind can help in the treatment process making it more effective for the child.
