I remember as a kid, in high school I had the best History Teacher. She would go beyond the school text, and be such a sincere soul towards us troubled kids. We were not an easy bunch to wrangle in every class. She never yelled, always was a very calm and came off as so loving. It was when one of our friends from a close by class that was getting into trouble. We noticed her demeanor had switched. Her words remained the same, but the way she delivered a brief lecture had us worried. Something was not going well out there in the hallway. Her usual bubbly, gentle pitch, steady rhythm of pace, and with her longer pauses we all felt it at the same time. It was like she was prepping us for something. We had our usual fights and confrontation with the schools security before. Nothing big. This wasn’t the same. The way she looked at us, her facial expression went from a continuous smile to blank. Her hands looked like weights at her sides, unlike her mandated gestures with anything that came out of her mouth. We knew we had to do stay silent, we had to do exactly what she said. We heard the people scuffling in the hallway, she froze and someone got up to lock the classroom door and turn the lights off. She whispered harshly yet still with her blank facial expressions: Stay calm and remain silent. I don’t think I ever felt so worried. I suppose when you are put into certain situations the way you address people, the messages you are to deliver, all vary with in it’s context. If she had remained in her usual demeanor I don’t believe we would have taken her seriously. Your sense of conviction and your desire to communicate well give your voice the same spark it has in spontaneous conversation (Lucas, Stephen. The Art of Public Speaking. 13th ed., McGraw Hill 2007). Thank goodness we were all close enough to our teacher to realize when something was up with out her having to spell it out for us.
