Your assignment for this week\’s Research Journal is to give an overview of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), a Jihadist militant terrorist group operating in Southeast Asia. Who are these Jihadists? What are their goals? Who are they affiliated with? What are their most notable attacks? Are they a viable international threat or are they localized the SE Asia? These and any other questions need to be addressed in this week\’s Journal.
Each student will be required to write at least 500 words (approx. 1 page-single space) on the question/subject. Word count does not include titles, the original question nor reference list.

Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) is a militant extremist group of rebels operating in Southeast Asia and is dedicated to establishing an Islamic state in the region. Founded in 1993, the Jihadi extremist group’s current leader is Abu Bakar Ba’asyir. JI’s areas of operation include the Southeast region, which includes Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Philippines, Brunei, Singapore, and Malaysia. According to Abuza (2004), JI uses lethal violence to realize their political and religious objectives, and the group draws inspiration from a similar ideology as that of the Al Qaeda. The rebel group considers the Malaysian and Indonesian governments to be illegitimate, including other governments in the region.
JI’s primary goal is to revive and establish a pure form of an Islamic state that will be governed strictly by the Sharia doctrines (Islamic Law). JI also intends to advance and represent the Islamist movement’s development in Indonesia, also known as the Darul Islam (DI), which according to Pavlova (2007), fought a violent insurgency to develop the Indonesian Islamic state between the 1950s and 1960s.
