Constructed response assessment require the candidate to construct a response to the question rather than selecting the answer among options. The assessment includes short and long essay tests as well as completion tests. There are two categories of constructed response questions, which include extended and restricted response questions (Chappuis, 2015). Extended response questions require the candidate’s answer to have longer responses with two or more paragraphs. For example, essays, reports and dissertations. In formulating a good essay question, the examiner needs to be direct to the objective and give clear instruction or explanation. Restricted response questions require an answer with a few words. For example, a missing word question and complete the sentence question.

Advantages

Constructed response assessment motivates the students to show difficult and comprehensive understanding of the given subject or topic. Can be used to assess some education related skills and knowledge. In addition, constructed response assessment demonstrates the writing ability of the student and gives the candidate room to explain or state their opinion.  Constructed response also motivates the students to understand the importance of organizing information (Chappuis, 2015). Therefore, there is high chance of identifying student’s learning ability because it measures student’s ability to recall information.
