National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Founded in the late 1870s, NIH is one of the major agencies in the United States that specializes in biomedical and public health research. The agency is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland and the current director is Francis Collins (NIH, 2017). The institution is made up of 27 interrelated departments known as centers and institutes, for instance, National Eye Institute (NEI), NIH Clinical Center (CC), National Cancer Institute (NCI), and Fogarty International Center (FIC). Each department has specific research agendas that focus on a particular body system or disease. NIH conducts its research through Intramural research program (IRP) and most of it funding come from Congress (NIH, 2017). In addition, the agency helps to make important discoveries that help improve health and save lives.
