Pathophysiology

Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) is a disease that mostly affects children and it represents a systemic vasculitis or blood vessel inflammation. HSP involves the connective tissues and skin, gastrointestinal tract, scrotum, joints, and kidneys (Torrelo & Noguera, 2015). There are many different conditions that feature vasculitis in which complexes of complement component 3 (C3) and immunoglobulin A (IgA) are deposited on venules, capillaries, and arterioles. HSP affects the capillaries in the skin and kidneys resulting in a purplish skin rash. It is sometimes associated with cramping pain in the abdomen and joint inflammation (arthritis). The inflammation causes blood vessels in the kidneys, skin, intestines, and joints to start leaking.

Epidemiology HSP mostly affects children more than adults. Half of children suffering from HSP are aged below six years, and 90 percent are under ten years. The disease is twice more likely to occur in boys than in girls.
