Documented Inquiry Project – On the Populist Movement

Writing 4.0: Documented Inquiry Project

Synopsis of the Task
As noted on the assignment sheet for Writing 3.0, the Proposal, your fourth project of the term is your documented study. This is a paper that centers on a question(s) worthy of academic research. The paper will be eight to ten pages (12 point font, double spaced), not counting the title page, abstract and your works cited page.

Ancillaries
Besides the text itself, you will create an abstract, which should be about one paragraph in length. Other tasks will also be due along the way during the rest of the semester; thesis and outline with sub-headings, notes for me to check, revisions, and an oral presentation of your final paper to the class. Each of these is part of the entire assignment and without each, your final grade for Writing 4.0 will suffer penalties.

Format
The paper should be typed or word processed, double spaced, and can include headings. For any other questions about using tables or surveys, or other types of empirical research, use the sections of The Bedford Researcher as your guide. Page numbers are required for this paper and should be placed in the upper right hand corner of each page.

Documentation and Sources
Use MLA Documentation Style for the paper you’ll be writing. As far as numbers of sources to consider for a paper of this length, you should use a minimum of 6 reputable, academic sources, with a minimum of 6 in-text citations (one from each of these 6 sources). However, you should use more than this number of in-text citations. REMEMBER, you MUST give credit where credit is due. Any information included in your essay that you DID NOT know before finding that source, must be documented correctly, or it is plagiarism.

Copies of Quoted and Paraphrased Pages
When you turn in the final copy of your paper, please include copies (Xerox or originals) that contain all passages that you quote or paraphrase. To help me find them easily, please mark the passage by circling or highlighting them. If this is not included with the final version of your paper, you will receive a full grade deduction.

Oral Presentation
You will sign up for a time slot to present the results of your study to the rest of the class. Your presentation should be no longer than ten minutes, including a question/answer time, so your presentation should run between 7-10 minutes. It should summarize the essential points of the paper in such a way that the rest of us can understand what you’ve been working on. Your presentation should also address your research process and any difficulties you encountered in the research process.

The oral presentation is required. It is part of your overall grade for Writing 4.0. Before you make your final presentation, be sure to practice it enough so that you’re comfortable with your material, and so that your presentation will fit in its time slot.

Also, there will be a question on the final exam relating to some of the oral presentations in class, so you will want to take notes during the presentations.
