The authors of this article aim to determine whether the Black, Latino, and White job applicants matched on interpersonal skills and demographic attributes have equal employment opportunities (Pager, Bonikowski & Western, 2009). The authors argue that discrimination is a primary source of economic inequality in the contemporary business world. The study aims at finding out how the factors such as interpersonal skills and demographic characteristics influence job applications of various groups in New York City. According to the authors, racial discrimination in employment remains one of the most forms of economic inequality despite its ban in the 1960s (Pager et al., 2009). The main areas of discrimination arise from inequity in job opportunities and pay. For instance, the blacks and Latino have lesser chances of finding a job or they get low wages, compared to the whites. The findings show discrimination among specific minority groups where the blacks are only 50% probable to receive a callback for any job application.
Methods
The study is based on qualitative evidence. The research mainly concentrates on New York City hiring process and aims to study cases of discrimination among the employers within the region (Pager et al., 2009). The methodology is primarily a field experiment in the low-wage labor market of New York City. In addition, the authors use different methods to arrive at a conclusion.
