Daily Clinical Reflection # Day 1

On the first day of my OB clinical rotation, I went to the outpatient clinic. I had the opportunity to observe the direct care given to patients from an OB outpatient perspective. This office includes providers primarily, but Nurse Practitioners see patients there as well. We went through the COVID screening. I introduced myself to my preceptor, and she is accommodating and allowed me to observe her. She gave me a tour of the facility. I had the opportunity to get the vital signs, weight check, and do a pregnancy test on a few patients. Once it is confirmed through the pregnancy test is positive. I assisted my nurse in preparing for a prenatal ultrasound. I asked my patient to drink lots of fluid or not pee for a while so that her bladder will be full for the exam. I instructed her to change her cloth to the gown also provided privacy.
She put the gel on her abdomen to help with the transmission of the sound waves. The prenatal ultrasound is painless and usually took us less than 30 min. I had a few patients who came for an abdominal ultrasound and vaginal ultrasound. We gave the education on nutrition. One of my patient\’s history was diagnosed with ectopic pregnancy; she was very emotional when she came for her appointment. I supported my nurse by providing emotional support.
