As a nurse, it is your responsibility to ensure that clients understand their rights and to honor those rights while implementing care. They include the rights to respectful, considerate, and competent care; to participate fully in the decision-making process; to accept, refuse, or request modification of the plan of care. Let’s take a look at a situation where a nurse
encounters a conflict between the client’s wishes and those of her family. The nurses has introduced himself, performed hand hygiene, and followed the facilitys protocol for identifying the client.
Scenario:
Nurse: So, Mrs. Lieberman, How are you feeling today?
Client: The pain is unbearable. I just can’t do this anymore.
Nurse: Would you like me to get you some pain medication?
Client: Yes, please. But no more chemotherapy. It’s just too much for me.
Nurse: Well, I talked with Dr. Klein and he told me how you feel.
Daughter: Could I speak with you outside?
Nurse: Yeah.
Nurse: I’m going to go get your pain medication and speak with your daughter, if that’s okay.
Client: Yeah, its okay.
Nurse: Okay.
Nurse and daughter left the room:
Daughter: My mother does not know what she is saying. We have to do everything to save her.
She has to have the chemotherapy
