Case Study # 2: A Concerned Voter

You are a voter, that is your power. You are also a taxpayer whether you work or not. If you are a resident in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and pay taxes whenever you buy something, your elected representatives must be responsive to you. It’s that simple.

You are to contact either your local elected representative, local mayor, your Congressional representative, or your State Senator or perhaps even the President of the United States. Select one, it’s your choice.

Research the one you want to select and research what is her/his policy on any given issue of your choice. Pick a policy topic; this can be issues of the day such as environmental change, equal pay for women, immigration, or any other of your choice. Obtain their contact information and email. Email the politician you selected and inform that you are enrolled at Quincy College in Dr. Daniel Ibarrondo’s GOV 201 American Government course and you want to learn what his or her position is on the topic that you selected. You may want to inform that you are a registered voter (if you’re not a registered voter, then leave that information out and go register and to vote). Draft the email in proper English and grammar and don’t forget to properly address the person such as “Dear Honorable ______.”

Finally, invite the elected official to share a statement. It can be a video statement, letter or email about the topic you selected. Feel free to expand your email narrative but short and sweet is best. If it’s a 5 paragraph email, they may not read it all.

As a concerned voter, you will present on what you learned from this exercise such as the experience of contacting your elected representative, how or why you selected the policy topic that you did, your reflection about this interaction.
