Purpose of assignment:

To develop your critical thinking skills by analyzing, synthesizing, and applying material learned from class and in the real-world to better understand aspects of the self.

Format Guidelines: The papers should be 5-7 pages in length, double-spaced, 1” margin, 12 point font.

Read 2 of the following journal articles to write about

(1) Ryan, R. M., & Deci. E. L. (2000). Self-determination theory and the facilitation of intrinsic motivation, social development, and well-being. American Psychologist, 55, 68-78.

(2) Markus, H. R., & Kitayama, S. (1991). Culture and the self: Implications for cognition, emotion, and motivation. Psychological Review, 98, 224-253.

Question to address in your paper:

Write a 5-7 page paper discussing how two journal articles from this semester (see list above; you can choose which two to talk about) relates to a specific personal experience or observation from your life. Be very specific and direct when making connections between the articles and your experiences or observations. Go in-depth with your analysis and discussion of the links you see between your example(s) and aspects of the article (e.g., theory, findings, conclusions, implications). You can use first person pronouns when writing your paper (e.g., I, me, my, etc.)

Some tips:

–It is better to go in-depth with one or two examples and to discuss how they relate to specific theories and findings from the articles, rather than listing a bunch of examples without elaborating further on how they relate to the articles. Also, be sure to talk about both articles, rather than focusing on just one article.

–Use specific examples but remember to keep coming back to how that relates to the article(s).

–Try not to not use direct quotes from the articles; instead, paraphrase what you read so that you are saying things in your own words, rather than just quoting the authors.

–You don’t need a separate title page or references page; you also don’t need to research any outside sources.

–When citing the articles in your paper, use American Psychological Association (APA) style:

When writing a sentence:

Fredrickson and Roberts (1997) theorized that…

OR When referencing the article at the end of a sentence:

…had positive effects on motivation (Ryan & Deci, 2000).

…with negative consequences for well-being (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997).

The directions say only use the articles and no other outside sources. A title and reference page is not required however the articles need to be referenced at the end of sentences when discussed.
