ASSIGNMENT | Understanding Macro-Level Inequalities

For this paper, as we look at Macro inequalities, the research will delve into looking at Education (pre-K through 12 or higher ed). My argument will gear towards exposing the continual prejudices and stereotypes in the American school systems against immigrant minorities, drawing from contemporary issues, including historical facts, and data statistics.

Instruction: All papers should focus on structural and institutional forms of inequality. Some institutions to consider are below. Choose one of those, and delve into one of the -isms within that institution. While you will focus on one -ism, remember that groups are not homogenous. Racism, sexism, classism, ableism, ageism, heterosexism, etc. should all be looked at through an intersectional lens. You can also pick a specific issue within one of these institutions (e.g., mental health, access to clean water, foster care, gerrymandering, mortgage lending, DACA, etc.).
For Unit 3, you will chose a topic to explore institutional and structural inequalities in the United States. You should focus on contemporary society (i.e., today). However you may want to draw from some historical connections, depending on your topic. Your paper should be 3-4 complete pages, plus a Works Cited/References page. You should use at least three outside sources, at least one of which should be a peer-reviewed journal article.

What do institutional and structural inequality look like in that institution?
What data/statistics illustrate this?
What stories or specific scenarios illustrate this?
What specific/primary issues are being fought over?
Which groups have influence or power to make decisions? How so?
What historical influences have led to these outcomes?
What specific policies or institutional practices continue to perpetuate inequalities?
What are specific ongoing or continuing consequences of these inequalities?
