School-Based Notebook (SBN) Observation Paper

For this assignment, go to the following website: https://wida.wisc.edu/teach/standards/in-action . Choose one video to watch and take notes on. Use the checklist below to guide your observations. This is a guide to help you be aware of the actions the teacher in the video could take to support their ELs based on TESOL’s 6 Principles for Exemplary Teaching of English Learners. You only need to discuss what you have observed, but you do need to address each category listed in your paper. Once you have made notes on the checklist, use the information you have recorded to help you write the paper.

Instructions

For this assignment, you will write a 4-6 page, APA-style, observation paper based on a video you watch. The link to the video (follow Link)

Observation Checklist document in the SBN Observation Paper module within the ESOL School-Based Notebook module to guide your observation.

The paper has three main parts:

1. An introduction describing what you observed about the classroom in the video. About how many students are there? What grade are the students in? Who is the teacher (a brief description is fine)?
2. A discussion of your observations. Please use the checklist in the SBN Observation Paper module to guide your observations. Then, write a paper addressing each subject below, and separate your discussion by the following headings (taken from the checklist).
– Know your learners
– Create conditions for language learning
– Design high-quality lessons for language development
– Adapt lesson delivery as needed
-Monitor and assess student language development
-Engage and collaborate within a community of practice
7. A 1-2 paragraph reflection on the appropriate question: If you plan to teach ( I do plan to teach), would you apply this approach to your future teaching of ELLs? Why/why not? If you do not plan to teach, what was the most valuable thing you learned from watching this video and how will it help you in your future career? Be specific.

Teaching a second language can be challenging. Strategies may include a change in the mode of instruction delivery as well as the use of the TESOL principles for exemplary teaching. The principles dictate that a teacher should start by knowing their learners, creating proper conditions for language learning. Thirdly, teachers have to come up with high-quality lessons that can help language development. Fourthly, teachers have to adapt their lesson delivery as required and monitor/to assess student language development. This essay will use a sample video of teaching Els in evaluating the utility of TESOL principles in learning.
