(Criterion #1 – While there are a number of patient-related and organizational/environmental risk factors for workplace violence, this criterion requires a discussion of POLITICAL, LEGAL and/or LEGISLATIVE FACTORS that CONTRIBUTE to WPV. While there are a number of these, it might be helpful for you to consider several questions. Are there any current federal regulations against WPV in the healthcare setting? If not, does the absence of such laws contribute to WPV? Note that this bill has NOT YET been passed into law. What message does that send? Also, focus on the state in which you practice. Also think about the political/legal environment related to the availability of weapons. Guns are primary weapons used in violence against healthcare workers; are there federal laws that restrict gun ownership to protect the citizens? Also, once again, think about the state in which you practice. Does your state have open-carry or concealed weapons laws that might allow people to take guns into healthcare organizations? Some states have passed laws that criminalize taking any weapons into a healthcare facility, but many have not done so and permit this practice. Addressing these questions would be one way that you could meet the requirement of this criterion)
