For the written portion of the assignment, you will need to choose 5 topics you want to write about that you observed during your service hours; look over terms in the book relating to the age you observed. You may have to look ahead to content we have not covered yet. Then you will write one summary for each topic (no duplicate topics will receive credit.) For example, I might observe children at the Hawkeye Day Care. After observing, I can relate altruism, aggression, attraction, group dynamics, and Socio-economic status (5 terms from class) to my observations. Each summary should follow this standard format:
In observing, I noticed…. (explain what you saw that demonstrates a class concept.)
This relates to PUT THE TERM HERE YOU ARE APPLYING that I’ve learned in Developmental Psychology. (Then discuss in a few sentences AT LEAST 2-3 FACTS you learned about that topic in class or from the textbook.)
In additional research, I’ve learned ….(discuss AT LEAST 2-3 FACTS you learned from an additional source. The additional source MUST BE A PEER REVIEWED JOURNAL ARTICLE found using LIBRARY DATA BANKS, NO INTERNET SITES OR ADDITIONAL TEXTBOOKS ALLOWED. OneSearch is the recommended data base provided by the library and found on the library home page.) You can NOT use the same source for two summaries.
When using OneSearch, some helpful hints are to include the search term and/or related terms. For example, if I search “animismâ€, it is helpful to add “toddlers†in the search box. Perhaps not much comes up for Piaget’s “initiative†so I could search “toddlers cognitive abilityâ€. CHOOSE ONLY [PEER REVIEWED] ARTICLES. IT WILL STATE THIS IN THE LISTING AFTER THE JOURNAL NAME, VOL#, PGS. To help choose [Peer Reviewed], you can also click on the AVAILABILITY: PEER REVIEWED under the “Tweek My Results†on the right side of the page. Finally, I also recommend clicking on the “Full Text Online†option so that you can read the full length article without needing to search further for one.
Dictionary, encyclopedia, or other reference material is NOT acceptable. You MUST use RESEARCH material, where the author has done research and/or investigated or conducted a study on the subject.
based on this, I like you to cover the below topics:
Toddler\’s emotions and Temperament, Attachment, social referencing, conservation and logic, social learning.
Book title: Invitation to the Life Span
Author: Kathleen Stassen Berger
sample of the paper:
(Part 1) I did my observation at a preschool, and saw a toddler going down a slide. She had to climb up the steps and catch herself at the bottom of the slide using the large muscles in her legs. I believe this is an example of gross motor skills. (Part 2) In class, we learned that toddlers must continue to show improved balance and coordination, and as they develop better motor skills, they practice and practice to improve. Boys have better gross motor skills than girls, while girls develop better fine motor skills. (Part 3) In an additional source, I learned that toddlers show major improvement in large muscles over the years from three to five. During this time it is possible to expect toddlers to begin jumping and playing games like leap frog. The authors also discussed how motor development also helps to stimulate brain growth, which I thought was really interesting!
