ASSIGNMENT | Benchmark – Extended Day Service Proposal

Imagine you are a special education teacher for a middle school. Between all three grades (grades 6-8), you have 10 students with an ASD diagnosis. One stays in the special education setting throughout the day, three are in either the general education or the special education classrooms, and six are fully integrated in the general education classroom. Your principal has identified a funding source for trying out new ASD services, and is interested in using this funding source to offer a free extended day program (either before or after school) to the students with ASD. She has asked you to research the concept and write the narrative for a proposal for it (everything but the budget). In 1,000-1,250-words, include the following in your proposal:

Overall goal of the program including the student learning and development needs it is intended to help challenge and grow.
Description of the proposed program, including when, where, and how the program would run.
Two to three potential outcomes/results for students (and families, if desired) that could be measured over the course of one academic year to demonstrate if the program is beneficial or not.
Instructional or assistive technologies that would be used in the program and for what purpose.
Staffing that would be required, along with a summary description of professional development on ASD that would be provided to all program staff.
Rationale for the program that demonstrates how the program is founded on evidence-based practices that have proven to be beneficial for students with ASD, and supports applicable legal requirements for providing services to students with exceptionalities.
Three to five research-based resources that support your program and rationale, referenced throughout the proposal.

Students that have ASD are always faced with many challenges not only in a school set-up but also at home. Most have to contend with their low level of concentration that at times subjects them to stigma. Other challenges that they have are their inability to interact well with others, their distorted speech and low esteem. In my class, I have had to come up with strategies to ensure there is proper integration with other learners. However, a lot needs to be done to ensure they get the full benefit of learning. The new ASD program that has been proposed owing to the availability of funding will find great utility in ensuring that students the 10 students under my care receive quality learning.
