COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 This course offers the study of human responses, and related nursing care, for individuals and their families challenged by progressive and chronic, physical or mental health problems. A family case study approach, with attention to human diversity, will assist the student to examine a range of illnesses, with an emphasis on rehabilitative and supportive nursing care. Opportunities for discussion related to the determinants of health, current research and knowledge, and ethical reasoning as a basis for professional nursing care, will also be included.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 The student will:

1. Apply understanding of the relationships between human diversity, determinants of health, environment, and responses to health and illness to the study of progressive and chronic physical or mental health problems.

 2. Explain common human responses, of individuals and their families, to progressive and chronic physical or mental health problems.

3. Begin to identify a range of acceptable health outcomes in rehabilitative and supportive care contexts. 4. Apply knowledge of health and illness to guide the examination of nursing practice within rehabilitative and supportive care contexts.

 5. Apply elements of family nursing theory to assess and analyze family function and plan nursing care. 6. Explore the nature of collaborative relationships with other health care team members when caring for individuals and their families who are experiencing progressive and chronic physical or mental health problems.

7. Describe the influence of research and knowledge on the planning and delivery of nursing care of individuals and their families who are experiencing progressive and chronic physical or mental health problems.

8. Examine personal beliefs and values in relation to those of the nursing profession, when planning the delivery of nursing care in rehabilitative and supportive contexts.

9. Apply elements of ethical theory to examine various clinical situations involving the care of individuals and their families with progressive and chronic physical or mental health problems.
