Think of this assignment as a report you would make in a professional context. Using the following case study: Religion, Business and Law: Aalia, a young Muslim-American woman, applied for a job in an elite jewelry store. Aalia, demonstrated her extensive knowledge of jewelry during the interview, and was hired. She wore a hijab (headscarf) to the interview. During the interview, she was not asked about her attire, and she also did not mention requiring a religious accommodation when she was hired. When she arrived for her first day of work to sell jewelry, she was told that she could not wear a head covering while on the floor serving customers. She informed her employer that she would not remove the hijab, and it was required of her by her religion to wear it at all times while in public. Her employer informed her that due to store policy, while they could not allow her to work in the front of the store, they could move her to a bookkeeping position in the office where she would be away from customers. Aalia, who had applied to sell jewelry was not interested in the bookkeeping position, and felt the employer\’s request was a violation of her rights. She enlisted the services of an attorney to determine her legal rights.
• Analyze how this problem may unfairly impact members of the populations described in the Introduction to Hays\’s ADDRESSING Model document: All of us have multifaceted cultural identities and in spite of our best efforts, we all have biases that can affect our work with people whose backgrounds are similar or different than our own. Failure to recognize these biases creates harm. It takes more strength to acknowledge your biases than to argue that you do not have any.
•
• Dr. Pamela Hays developed the \”ADDRESSING\” model, composed of 10 major factors of cultural difference that are most common in the United States. This model is very helpful for recognizing cultural difference and potential bias, but note that this list is not comprehensive. Many other cultural identities can be recognized in our country.
The cultural groups identified in the ADDRESSING model are: A. Age. D. Disability born with. D. Disability acquired. R. Religion. E. Ethnicity. S. Socioeconomic. S. Sexual orientation. I. Indigenous status. N. Nationality. G. Gender
Initially, you should brainstorm as many of such effects as possible. You may also develop fictional scenarios related to your problem where individuals behave inequitably. However, if you do so, take care that your scenarios are realistic.
Combine ideas that are similar when you have developed many entries.
Assess each of your remaining entries in terms of importance:
o In what ways is it inequitable?
o How great or severe is the effect?
o How many people may be affected?
• Take care that you do not allow your own biases to minimize your assessments.
• Choose the entry that seems to be of greatest importance, on the basis of your evaluation.
• Organize your notes and attach them to this Assignment as an appendix.
