ELL Proficiency Standards

Using the English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards from Arizona or from your state, select the stage for a grade level of your choice. Based on the Common Core Standards” English Language Arts (ELA) performance objectives or the English Language Arts Standards from your state, create a learning activity that is aligned with a learning objective at the basic proficiency level on the ELP standards for each of the following domains:
Listening and Speaking
Reading
Writing
Account for language acquisition principles within the design of your activities.

SAMPLE SOLUTION

ELP standards provide guidelines that direct the language development of an ESL student. Because Colorado is a member state of the WIDA consortium, the WIDA English development standards are applied in the state. At the Basic English proficiency level, a major learning objective is to ensure that an ELL can view, read, and listen to derive meaning from oral and written presentations (Bailey & Carroll, 2015). The learning activity to be done in class should ensure that the student can read, write, listen and speak using English in a specific subject area. Moreover, a good learning activity will test a student’s ability to pay close attention to English texts and derive the correct meanings from the subject content.
