The purpose of the argumentative essay is to assess critical thinking and written communication skills. The assignmentis worth 25 percent of the C100 block grade and is due after you have completed all C100 lessons.
ESSAY TOPIC
Topic: Do the elements of thought, as described by Drs. Paul & Elder, assist Army officers conducting the Army Problem Solving Process? Argue why or why not.
Note: You must select a position and support the position with thought and analysis following the argumentative essay format found in ST 22-2. Simply listing or defining the elements of thought and the problem solving process will NOT successfully complete this assignment.
You learned about the academic research of Drs. Paul & Elder in the online lesson C122 Critical and Creative Thinking. You may want to review the lesson prior to starting work on your paper.
According to Drs. Paul & Elder, there are eight elements of thought; the elements of thought are:
• Point of view
• Purpose
• Question or problem
• Information
• Inferences and conclusions
• Concepts and theories
• Assumptions
• Implications and consequences
In addition, you must read Chapter 4 “Problem Solving” of FM 6-0 Commander and Staff Organization and Operations (May 2014). In this chapter, you will learn about the Army Problem Solving Process.
The process consists of seven steps:
• Gather information and knowledge.
• Identify the problem.
• Develop criteria.
• Generate possible solutions.
• Analyze possible solutions.
• Compare possible solutions.
• Make and implement the decision.
The argumentative essay will be three to five typed, double-spaced pages. The paper will use one-inch margins and Times New Roman 12-pitch font. Remember to use third person and active voice in academic writing.
Always cite the sources used to write your paper. If something is not your original thought, you must cite your source using either footnotes or endnotes IAW the Turabian style of documentation; do not use parenthetical citations. This includes direct quotations, paraphrases, and summaries of the assigned readings, doctrinal references, or outside sources.

• Student Text 22-2 Leader Communication (October 2013).
• A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (8th Edition)by Kate L. Turabian.

• Chapter 1 reviews critical thinking, creative thinking, decision making, and problem solving.
• Chapter 2 discusses substance, organization, style, and correctness; the writing process; and documenting sources.
