Whistleblowers are people who expose misconduct of a fellow employee or senior management through anonymous reporting methods usually known as hotlines. Some whistleblowers disclose the information to their superiors while others put this information out there for the public through the press or the media (Dussuyer, Armstrong & Smith, 2015). They are usually taken to court with accusations of criminal charges and also the termination of their jobs. To stop this, there are some laws that have been set to protect them. There are consequences that whistleblowers face when they expose confidential and personal information. First, their personal life is endangered, especially when reporting the misconduct of large organizations because such organizations have strict rules and guidelines. They become isolated because they are portrayed as traitors to the public and friends avoid them, especially at work. Whistleblowers also face the risk of being harmed as they have exposed powerful people who are usually company executives, managers and even politicians (Bouter & Hendrix, 2017).
