Shift Change Bedside Report to Improve Nurse Communication and Patient Safety
A1. Problem Identification
Delivery of safe, quality and proper health care is necessary for patient’s health. Currently, there is a wide range of safety issues that have been challenging healthcare delivery in the hospital, and therefore, many human resource and organizational strategies must be developed to promote quality healthcare delivery and patient safety (Estrella, 2016). Nursing is a practical discipline that requires direct and indirect involvement in care activities to maximize the effect of health outcome on a patient. As a nursing practitioner, one is required to develop more advanced competencies in leadership and apply them in real practice situations.
Currently, on our busy acute care unit, shift change report consists of an outgoing nurse giving report to incoming nurse in report room or wherever there is space available. Shift change report can range from 30 – 45 minutes for each nurse to get reports for all his patients.
