Introduction

As social dynamics continue to change, so is the current status of special education. This calls for all stakeholders and practitioners to craft a plan that takes into consideration the interests of the changing dynamics of special education and how they impact on the present and future landscapes.

Redefining and Redesigning Special Education Policies and Practices

Many learners with various kinds of disabilities are now able to access quality education in our public schools without discrimination (Armstrong, Armstrong & Barton, 2016). This has been facilitated by the widespread adoption of human rights’ based approach to education policy. Our education system has become more general disregard of the status like never before. Moreover, there has been a sustained debate related to the type of learners our education system serves and how better to help all the students. This should continue as we analyze the question, “what is unique or rather special with special education? (Bigby, Frawley & Ramcharan, 2014). The exceptional education system, judging from history, cannot be the solution to the challenges that students with disabilities have been facing over the years. An inclusive education and not private education holds the key to education reforms. Special education has failed, at least in the past, to provide the much-needed equality and equity regarding access to education (Dell, Newton & Petroff, 2016).
