ESSAY : Creative movement and music

Movement is a powerful communicator that can fascinate or repel and delight or disgust us. And yet, unlike the use of words, movement is not a communication form often considered to be part of the basics in most schools, even in early childhood programs. Perhaps it is so basic we simply take for granted that we all know how to use it effectively. But we don\’t. Creative movement are frequently the part of the curriculum that teachers are most unprepared to integrate in their classrooms.

Musical experiences like these are a common occurrence in a young child\’s life. Children love the sound of their own voices, and chanting is the way they experiment with sound and rhythm. Chants are half-speaking, half-singing songs that often accompany young children\’s play. Make up original chants and songs and moving rhythmically to musical beats are quite natural to a young child, for whom music is a favorite avenue for creative expression.
