Embedded in the City’s framing of problems and its proposed interventions are correlations between environmental and social factors and crime rates. For example:

In the Problem definition, “distress” and “highest # of shootings” are linked to “concentrated…ills” in “neighborhoods,” including poor health and low educational and job attainment.
In the strategy about increasing access to employment, the City posits that “High unemployment and low educational achievement are contributing factors to high crime rates,” thus “…reducing crime starts with prevention.”
These correlations are tied to a theory of neighborhood crime variously described as “concentrated poverty,” “neighborhood effects,” or “social disorganization\” to ascribe high crime to impoverished neighborhoods.

The Assignment

Working independently, identify one scholarly research article that provides evidence for the links between neighborhood poverty, including specific factors such as low employment or educational attainment, and crime rates. In a discussion post, explain the findings in the article, including the conclusions about outcomes and/or potential solutions for reducing crime. Please reproduce or create at least one figure to demonstrate correlation between crime and neighborhood effects. Your write-up should be approximately one page (~300 words, 2-3 paragraphs) and be in your own words so a lay reader can understand the findings. Your partner (and me) is your audience. You should each identify your own article and explain it to the other. Then you will comment on the other\’s analysis by adding your own insights OR asking clarifying questions.
