Introduction
The Iran-contra affair forms one of the biggest foreign policy scandals of the mid 80’s in the US. During the administration of President Ronald Reagan, senior government officials such as CIA director, NSC advisor secretly arranged for an arms-for-hostage deal with Iran. Through this arrangement, Israel would literally sell the arms from the US under the watch of senior government representatives (Marie & Naghshpour 2016). At the time, the Middle East country was designated as a sponsor of terrorism activities. But one wonders what motivated the American policy makers to engage in what would emerge as the scandal. This essay seeks to not only answer this question but also identify preventive and reform recommendations and explain the economic effect of the scandal.
