Annotation Burns and Hall (2009) embraced the use of theories of identity in order to contemplate mentoring relationships that should prevail between doctoral students and faculty members. The two authors stipulated that for the doctoral students to attain effective transition and become professional researchers, they need to conceptualize themselves both as individuals and professionals, as well as negotiate new identities. For this reason, the two authors suggested that there is need for professionalism to learn more about identity formation in order to gain more insights concerning how to socialize with the highly diverse groups of doctoral students. Moreover, the two authors stipulate that most faculty members are resourceful in offering guidance on doctoral education, because they have the relevant training and expertise.
