Scenario 2: A 42-year-old man comes to clinic with chief complaint of pain, redness, and swelling of his right calf. He states that he had been working in his yard using a string trimmer when the trimmer slipped and cut his leg. He cleaned the wound with water from the garden hose and covered the wound with a large Band-Aid. Several days later, he developed fever to 100.6˚ F and chills and noticed that his leg was swollen and red. He comes to the emergency department for definitive care.

(As you work on case study 2, the 42 year-old male with a wound, keep in mind the following:

1. Explain the reason(s) for each symptom at the cell level.

2. There may not be a strong genetic component here with this case, so think about genetic diseases that could make a patient high-risk if he/she sustains a wound and explain why.

3. Based on the information in the case we see no mention or risk of immunosuppression. So please explain how immunosuppression impairs the immune response. Start by discussing what a clinician would expect to see in an immune compromised patient, then connect the symptoms to pathophysiologic processes occurring at the cell level.
