During a shift a patient/service user/parent of a child asks if they can speak to a student nurse confidentially. They explain that the doctor has been to tell them that they/their child are now ready to be discharged. They were asked if they felt happy to be discharged home and because they did not want to create a fuss they said yes even though they still felt very unsure about how they would cope. They ask the student for help and want to know the student will have to tell anyone else about the conversation. This is the student’s first placement and they know that they will need to speak to their mentor and perhaps liaise with the doctor to ensure the patient/service user/parent of the child receives the correct support on discharge.In relation to the above scenario and learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the module discuss the role of the student nurse in this situation.
