Cataracts

Cataracts affect one in every six individuals aged 40 years and above. It is slightly more common in women than in men. A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of the eye which is capable of causing changes in an individual’s vision. The formation of cataracts results when protein substances in the eyes begin to develop clumps which prevent the lens from passing clear images to the retina. The function of the retina is to convert the light that passes through the lens into signals that are then transmitted to the optic nerve. The optic nerve then sends the signals to the brain for interpretation. At the onset of cataracts, vision is not very much interfered with but gradually, they affect normal vision necessitating individuals to use eyeglasses or stringer lighting (Liu et al., 2015).
The most common symptoms of cataracts include cloudy or blurry vision, changes in the way an individual sees color, trouble seeing with glare during the day, double vision in the affected eye, and difficulty driving at night due to glare from oncoming headlights for instance.
